What are Level Funded Plans?

A level funded plan is a hybrid between full insured and self funded plans. This plan involves the employer contributing to a fixed monthly payment to an insurance agency or third-party administrator (TPA) to cover the costs for administration fees, claims payments, and stop-loss insurance. Stop-loss insurance protects the company from medical claims that are higher than expected. That way, employers won’t have to worry about paying more than the amount put into their healthcare account per year. If the total claims costs were higher or lower than expected in a year, the TPA will make the appropriate adjustments, either in the form of a refund to employers for lower claims, or a premium increase when renewing the stop-loss insurance for higher claims.
